Newton County, GA (July 25, 2025) – A late-night police pursuit in Newton County ended in tragedy on July 25 when a 16-year-old driver was killed and another person was critically injured in a high-speed crash, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. when troopers say a gray Ford Fusion approached a joint road checkpoint on Georgia Highway 36 near Stone Mountain Street. When instructed to pull into a nearby parking lot for further inspection, the teenage driver chose instead to flee the scene, sparking a pursuit by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
The chase continued onto Georgia 81, where investigators say the fleeing vehicle attempted to pass another car south of Flat Shoals Road. The teen reportedly lost control, veering off the east shoulder, striking a utility pole, and eventually coming to rest in the middle of the roadway.
The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle—who has not yet been publicly identified—was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the pursuit and the crash. Further details have not yet been released.
