Newton Co., GA - One Killed, One Hurt in Accident on GA Hwy 36

Newton County, GA (July 25, 2025) – A late-night police pursuit in Newton County ended in tragedy on July 25 when a 16-year-old driver was killed and another person was critically injured in a high-speed crash, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. when troopers say a gray Ford Fusion approached a joint road checkpoint on Georgia Highway 36 near Stone Mountain Street. When instructed to pull into a nearby parking lot for further inspection, the teenage driver chose instead to flee the scene, sparking a pursuit by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

The chase continued onto Georgia 81, where investigators say the fleeing vehicle attempted to pass another car south of Flat Shoals Road. The teen reportedly lost control, veering off the east shoulder, striking a utility pole, and eventually coming to rest in the middle of the roadway.

The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle—who has not yet been publicly identified—was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the pursuit and the crash. Further details have not yet been released.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased individual. We also wish a rapid recovery to those hurt in this incident.

Georgia Car Crashes

Newton Co., GA - One Killed, One Hurt in Accident on GA Hwy 36Across Georgia, motor vehicle accidents remain a daily reality—often with life-altering consequences. According to data from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the state sees more than 330,000 crashes every year, and nearly 125,000 of them result in injuries. From busy highways to rural backroads like Georgia Highway 105, no part of the state is immune from the risks that come with being on the road.

Injury-causing accidents can happen in an instant—and they’re often the result of poor decisions, unsafe road conditions, or preventable mistakes. Among the most common contributors are:

Dangerous Intersections: Intersections continue to be hotspots for collisions. In rural or dimly lit areas, poor visibility, missing signage, or rushed decisions—such as making an unprotected left turn—can lead to violent and often avoidable crashes.

Speeding and Reckless Driving: Excessive speed remains one of the most dangerous driving behaviors. It reduces reaction time and dramatically increases impact force. Reckless driving—tailgating, erratic lane changes, or aggressive passing—further increases the odds of a serious wreck.

Failure to Yield Right-of-Way: Whether due to inattention, confusion, or sheer impatience, failing to yield is a leading cause of injury accidents at Georgia’s rural crossings and unregulated junctions.

Drowsy Driving: Driver fatigue is a hidden but deadly hazard, especially at night. Tired drivers are more likely to miss traffic signs, react too slowly, or even fall asleep at the wheel—causing devastating consequences.

For those injured in a crash, the hours and days that follow are critical. Medical treatment, insurance claims, and determining fault all require swift and strategic action. That’s where Karma Injury Law comes in.
