Georgia Pedestrian Accidents
Each year, Georgia sees hundreds of fatal pedestrian accidents, with a significant number taking place in busy metro areas like Atlanta. High-traffic corridors such as Peachtree Street, Memorial Drive, and state highways are especially dangerous for those on foot due to speeding vehicles, limited visibility, and the sheer volume of traffic. Data from the Georgia Department of Transportation shows that pedestrian fatalities remain a major public safety concern across the state.
These tragic crashes often occur under preventable circumstances, including:
Failure to Yield at Crosswalks: Drivers who ignore traffic signals or fail to slow down for pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks can cause deadly collisions, particularly in areas with heavy foot traffic.
Distracted Driving: Even a momentary distraction—checking a phone, adjusting a GPS, or looking away from the road—can mean the difference between life and death for someone crossing the street.
Speeding in Urban Areas: In city environments, higher speeds drastically increase the severity of injuries in a crash. A pedestrian struck at 40 mph is far less likely to survive than one hit at 20 mph.
Poor Lighting and Visibility: Many fatal pedestrian accidents happen at night or in low-light conditions, when drivers fail to spot someone walking along the roadway or crossing mid-block.
