Bartow Co., GA (May 13, 2025) – A deadly crash involving multiple vehicles, including several tractor-trailers, occurred early Tuesday morning, May 13, on Interstate I-75 South at milepost 308, leading to the deaths of at least three people. This stretch of I-75 is located between Calhoun and Adairsville.
The southbound lanes of I-75 were closed for several hours as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the crash.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the chain of events began when a tractor-trailer heading north on I-75 collided with a Hyundai Sonata. After the initial impact, the Sonata veered off the right shoulder of the highway, while the tractor-trailer crossed the median, entering the southbound lanes. There, it struck two additional tractor-trailers and two passenger vehicles, including a Toyota Corolla and a Ford Ranger, which subsequently caught fire.
In total, six vehicles were involved in the accident. Three people lost their lives in the crash, two others were taken to local hospitals with injuries, and two individuals emerged unscathed. As of now, authorities have not released the identities of the deceased, as next of kin have yet to be notified.
The GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team has taken over the investigation. The cause of the initial collision in the northbound lanes is still under investigation.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased individuals. We also wish those hurt a quick recovery.
Georgia Traffic Collisions
Semi-truck accidents are among the most catastrophic and life-altering collisions on Georgia’s roads. These massive vehicles, often weighing tens of thousands of pounds, can cause devastating damage when involved in accidents, especially fatal ones. Tragically, each year, Georgia sees a significant number of fatal crashes involving semi-trucks, many of which could have been prevented if drivers had acted responsibly.
Negligent truck driving has become a major concern across the United States, with large trucks involved in more than 10% of fatal accidents on the road. Over 94% of all traffic accidents, including semi-truck crashes, are attributed to driver error. Common causes of fatal semi-truck accidents include:
- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Fatigued driving (often due to long hours on the road)
- Speeding or driving too fast for road conditions
- Distracted driving (such as texting or using a phone while driving)
Speeding alone contributes to over 12,000 fatalities annually, while distractions and fatigue are common causes of crashes that involve trucks. Due to the size and weight of semi-trucks, these accidents tend to result in severe, if not fatal, injuries for the victims, with life-changing consequences for their families.
